Kent County Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Kent County Hazard Mitigation Plan is a comprehensive strategy designed to reduce the risks and impacts of natural disasters in our community. This plan identifies potential hazards, assesses vulnerabilities, and outlines actions to minimize damage and enhance resilience. By proactively addressing these threats, we aim to protect lives, property, and the environment.

             phases of mitigation

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires state and local governments to approved and adopted hazard mitigation plans to be eligible for certain types of non-emergency disaster assistance, including funding for mitigation projects. Jurisdictions must update their hazard mitigation plans and resubmit them for FEMA approval every five years to remain eligible. Kent County's Division of Emergency Management will begin the next Hazard Mitigation Plan Update in the Fall of 2024.

The plan benefits the public by:

  • Improving Safety: It helps to identify and implement measures that can protect residents during emergencies.
  • Reducing Damage: By understanding and mitigating risks, we can prevent or lessen damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
  • Enhancing Preparedness: It provides valuable information and resources to help individuals and families prepare for disasters.
  • Supporting Recovery: The plan includes strategies for a quicker and more efficient recovery after an event.

By staying informed and participating in mitigation activities, residents can contribute to a safer, stronger Kent County. Kent County residents are encouraged to be involved in the plan update. For additional information contact the Kent County Division of Emergency Management at 302-735-2200.
