Kent County Local Emergency Planning Committee
Welcome to the Kent County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC).
The Kent County LEPC is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community through effective planning, coordination, and communication. We focus on hazardous materials management, emergency preparedness, and community right-to-know initiatives. The LEPC meets at 10:00 AM on the second Tuesday of every odd month at the Kent County Emergency Services Building, 911 Public Safety Blvd., Dover, DE 19901. The public is welcome to attend.
Our Mission: To protect the residents, environment, and property of Kent County by promoting emergency preparedness and response capabilities related to hazardous materials.
Key Functions:
Emergency Planning: We develop and maintain comprehensive emergency response plans for hazardous materials incidents. These plans are designed to minimize risks and ensure a swift, coordinated response in the event of an emergency.
Community Right-to-Know: We provide the public with information about hazardous substances in their community. This transparency fosters awareness and preparedness among residents and businesses. For more information on Emergency Planning and Community Right-To-Know (EPCRA) visit DNREC Community Right-To-Know.
Training and Exercises: We conduct regular training programs and simulation exercises for first responders, local agencies, and community organizations. These activities help to ensure that everyone is prepared to respond effectively in an emergency.
Collaboration: Our committee comprises representatives from local government, industry, emergency services, health agencies, and the community. This diverse membership allows us to draw on a wide range of expertise and perspectives to enhance our emergency planning and response efforts.
Public Outreach: We engage with the community through educational programs, public meetings, and outreach initiatives. Our goal is to keep residents informed and involved in emergency preparedness activities. Residents are encouraged to register for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's (DNREC) Public Portal and take advantage of easier public access, awareness, and knowledge of chemicals stored or used in their community. At the Kent County LEPC, we believe that a well-prepared community is a safer community. We are committed to working together with all stakeholders to enhance the safety and resilience of Kent County.
